2012 Children & Young People

A number of projects contributing towards Nottinghamshire's 2012 Children & Young People's Legacy are now well underway:

International Inspiration
International Inspiration is a London 2012 project which aims to transform the lives of millions of children and young people of all abilities. Taking place in schools and communities across the world, particularly in developing countries, it uses the power of high quality and inclusive physical education, sport and play. The programme started in September 2007 and Nottinghamshire schools were involved through links with schools in Brazil. The partnerships between the 12 Brazilian schools and the 12 Nottinghamshire schools have flourished, allowing teachers and young leaders to develop joint projects that focus on adopting innovative approaches to the use of PE and sport in schools. Both sets of schools are also building links and sharing their experiences under the programme with other schools and community groups in their local area.

In October 2009, students and staff involved in the project travelled to Brazil for a week. Selby Park, Tuxford, Elizabethan, Portland and St Giles are all twinned with schools in the state of Alagoas in Brazil. The students and teachers met in Sesc Guaxuma in Maceio for a sports festival which promoted excellent teamwork and displays of talent. The barriers of communication were broken by both nationalities forming strong friendships which will be continued via internet links. The students found the trip to be a very enlightening experience allowing them to see the culture and demands of everyday life for the newfound friends.

Liam Robinson said, "It was the trip of a lifetime, I will never have a better week than we had. Everyone got along with each other, made some cracking friends that I will stay in touch with. The best part was going to their school and seeing how they worked on a daily basis. Great, loving people who welcomed us with open arms."

The integration of students with special needs is not normal practice in many parts of Brazil and the teachers from St. Giles' were pleased to see that this is being addressed by their twin school. The hope for the future is that other schools will follow suit and make a difference to these young people, giving them a better chance in life.

Musubi Days
Following the news that Loughborough University has forged a partnership with the Japanese Olympic Committee in the run up to 2012, Gaynor Nash, Regional Coordinator for 2012 Legacy for Children and Young People, has developed a project called Musubi Days linked to South Wolds Community College and hosted at Loughborough.

Musubi is Japanese for a link or tie and is being used as a metaphor to promote the connections between Japan and our region, our schools and Loughborough University as a sporting centre of excellence and our Language Colleges to each other.

Two Musubi days have already been organised by students from South Wolds where they introduced the Campion School from Northamptonshire and Aldercar Community Language College from Derbyshire to all things Japanese including their language, culture, customs and sports. Musubi days will be planned each term in the run up to London 2012 culminating in a Musubi Festival in the summer of 2012. The Musubi project has been recognised under London 2012's Inspire programme which aims to bring the benefits of the 2012 Games to every part of the UK.

As part of the East Midlands Legacy project for children and young people, a new campaign called EMpowered has been launched recently.

Linked to the 2012 Olympics, 'EMpowered' is a project which matches the seven values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the seven disciplines in the women's Heptathlon event. Children and young people can follow web links to stories that reflect the value or celebrate the top stars in the discipline. They can then submit either a discursive or creative response to have the chance to win a prize supplied by a London 2012 partner organisation.

‘EMpowered' launched on 7 June 2010 for children and young people in the East Midlands with the value ‘Courage' and the 100 metres hurdles.
