Calling all walkers – Breast Cancer Campaign wants you to flutter around Sherwood Forest this Sunday by taking part in the annual Edwinstowe Angels Friendship Walk.

For a fifth year running, dedicated Walk Champ Julie Hallam is hosting the five-mile walk to raise money for breast cancer research. Since the first walk in 2004, the Edwinstowe Angels have raised a staggering £60,000 for Campaign and they want to make 2009’s Sunday stroll even bigger and pinker!

Julie said: “In 2008 we had almost 400 walkers taking part and each year it just keeps on growing! It’s great that the walk has become an annual event and it’s a lovely opportunity for people to get together and raise money for this very worthwhile cause.”

The trainee social worker first organised the sponsored walk with her friend, Mandy, who had breast cancer in 2005. Mandy sadly passed away in 2006 and Julie has continued to host it in her memory.

She added: “Breast cancer affects so many people so we hope that many people will dig deep and help Campaign continue their mission to beat this disease by funding vital breast cancer research.”

The walk starts at 10am at the Edwinstowe cricket pavilion. Registration is free, but everyone is encouraged to raise a minimum of £20 and people can sign up on the day to take part. All walkers will receive a goody bag and medal once they have finished.

The money raised from this walk will help fund a project by Dr Stewart Martin and Dr Caroline Woolston at the University of Nottingham. Dr Martin will study a group of molecules called redox proteins which are thought to help breast cancer cells survive. By examining breast cancer samples he hopes to discover whether these proteins play a role in the development of breast cancer and whether they are resistant to breast cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

If you would like to join Julie in the Edwinstowe Angels Friendship Walk please call 020 7749 4126 or visit www.friendshipwalks.co.uk Alternatively, if you cannot attend the walk but would like to raise money for Campaign, why not take part in our new walking challenge STEP ON IT? The aim of this event is to walk a step for every person diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year – that’s 46,000 steps – in 46 hours. Mansfield will have a record number of young swimmers at this year’s ASA National Youth Championships in Sheffield in July – the same championships where Rebecca Adlington first made her breakthrough at national level.

Inspired by Becky’s double-Olympic Gold, 13 swimmers from the Mansfield Nova Squad have qualified for this year’s event – the highest number since the squad was formed in the early 1990s.

It was at the same event in 2001 when a then 12 year-old Rebecca Adlington from Mansfield first made her breakthrough at a national level, winning two gold medals, a silver and two bronzes.

The Mansfield Nova squad trains daily at the Water Meadows Swimming Complex, under the stewardship of Mansfield District Council’s Swimming Development Officer, Glenn Smith.

The young swimmers train alongside Paralympic Gold Medalist, Sam Hynd and Paralympic finalist, Charlotte Henshaw.

Glenn said, "To have 13 young swimmers from a small area like Mansfield achieve qualification for the premier national event in their sport is incredible. It is a fantastic achievement by the swimmers, coaches and all the base clubs in Mansfield and the surrounding area.

"It shows once again that the swimming development programme, run jointly by Notts County Council and Mansfield District Council, can produce swimmers at the highest level and continues to get even stronger.

"Who knows, the next Olympic champion from Mansfield might be amongst this talented group?"

The Mansfield Nova Squad qualifiers are:

Heidi Gregory (Age-group qualifier); Daniel Barke (Age-group qualifier); Daniel Timms (Age-group qualifier); Sebastian Smith (Age-group qualifier); Karl Morgan (Age-group qualifier); Kerian Mginley (Age-group qualifier); Alice Thomas (Youth Qualifier); Katie Gillies (Youth Qualifier); Kelly Ramsdale (Youth Qualifier); Lewis Steptoe (Youth Qualifier); Rachael Selby (Youth Qualifier); Amelia Taylor (Youth Qualifier) and Amy Hull (Youth Qualifier)

The 2009 British Gas ASA National Youth Championships and ASA National Championships are held between 28 July and 2 August 2009 at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. Tickets and further information about the event is available at www.britishswimming.org

The record number of qualifiers caps an incredible year for Mansfield swimming, which has included

· Rebecca Adlington: double Olympic champion (800m and 400m Freestyle); Gold and Silver medals at the British Championships.

· Sam Hynd: Paralympic champion S8 400m Freestyle and Bronze SM8 200m Ind Medley; Paralympic World Cup Champion.

· Charlotte Henshaw: Paralympic World Cup Champion(SB6 100m Breaststroke); Finished 4th in Paralympic Final (SB6 100m Breaststroke)

· Daniel Mills: GB Youth International, European Youth Olympic Team 2007; Selected for European Junior Championships 2009

YET MORE SUCCESS AT DORNEY LAKE.

Marlow Regatta 2009 was held at the Eton College’s Country Park and Rowing Lake at Dorney, the intended site for rowing in the 2012 Olympic Games. It was the last major event before Men’s Henley.

Conditions were cool and breezy.

Two Nottingham Rowing Club crews made the finals and Coaches Dez Atkins and Dan Johnson felt results boded well for Henley.

The club’s Juniors rowed well and took three trophies.

Sam Ward (Bilborough College) combined with Sam Bradbury from Leicester Rowing Club to repeat their Ghent exploits and win J 18 double sculls beating hosts Marlow in the final.

Ben Sibly (Bilborough College) won J 18 single sculls overcoming his rivals convincingly in a very good time of 7min 23secs for 2000m.Nik Parnell was fifth in the same race and came third in a final on Sunday.

Martin Kay coaches the boys.

Two others from the Junior squad, Dominic Harisson (Colonel Frank Seeley School Calverton) and Ed Fisher (Harry Carlton School East Leake rowing in a boat sponsored by Liniear Insulations, came second to Walton Rowing Club. The boys had entered the J16 event even though they are only 15.

Nottingham’s unbeaten J14 boy scullers then combined with Marlow and won the J 14 octuple event beating Radley College and Windsor Boys School in the final. Jack Caston (Becket School), Harry Townsend (South Wolds School Keyworth) and Callam Jones (Belvoir High School) have won at Dorney earlier in the year. Steve Millett is their coach.

Women's Henley

Nottingham Rowing Club entered eight boats at Women’s Henley and all progressed through the initial qualifiers.

The event was rowed on a cool breezy stretch of the River Thames.

The Women’s A coxed four and the Lightweight coxless four both lost to the eventual winners (Stratford on Avon Boat Club and Mortlake Anglian and Alpha Boat club.) Chief Club Coach Helen Bloor oversees their training.

The joint entry with Leander, Wallingford and Minerva/Bath with Lyndsey Morton and Catherine Lineker aboard, won elite coxed fours beating Oxford City in the final by one length. This ensured that for the third year in succession and indeed every year since it was founded in 2006, Nottingham Rowing Club women have won at Women’s Henley. It was Catherine and Lyndsey’s second Henley medal.

Then in almost the last race of the day the J15 quad beat Maidenhead Rowing Club in the final of the J16 event. With Katy Bartlett( Holygirt School )at bow, Mary Wilson (Nottingham Girls High School) at two, Holly Oughton (Holygirt School) at three and stroked by Alicia Brown( Arnold Hill School) they had earlier eliminated a Rob Roy/Nottingham composite coached by Paul Stevens and containing Lucy Crooks and Georgia Smith both from Nottingham Girls High.

The winning crew is coached by Andrew Wilson and Julie Edwards-a World Class Start Coach, sponsored by Siemens, who is based at the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont.

The girls rowed in a boat sponsored by local firm ‘Oarsport’.

Nottingham Rowing Club aim to hold a party to celebrate this week-end’s successes which brings this season’s haul to 90 so far!
