GBWR Development's new annual Corporate team building day is to go ahead!  On Saturday the 7th June 2008 at stoke Mandeville stadium corporate delegates from an array of companies, including Mayer & Brown, Barclays Global Investors and Citibank; will form teams and battle it out in a mini league.

The aim of the day is to be a disability awareness day and the opportunity for delegates to learn a new appreciation of wheelchair users whilst learning a brand new sport and then competing in it!

The teams will also have the privilege of playing alongside, or maybe even against England rugby stars! - 2 already confirmed as Jason Leonard and Kyran Bracken!

There will be a demonstration in the morning followed by the mini league in the afternoon, and weather permitting an evening BBQ to round things up.  (Heineken are even threatening to sponsor the refreshments!)

This is a fundraising event too, the participating teams have very generously donated to GBWR development in support of this event, to help run our vital development strategy in 2008/9.  Many of you will be aware of the funding crisis that has plagued development and it is my belief that this new and exciting annual event will finally be the end of it!

On a warm, calm, late spring day, 360 crews raced at Shrewsbury Regatta, held on the meandering River Severn.

Nottingham Rowing Club were there in force.  Aiming to build on their fantastic start to the season.  As there was an open day at the Club on Sunday, crews were only there for one day.  Nevertheless they came back with six trophies.

Highlight of the afternoon was the win by the Women's senior eight, stroked by Shirley Myers, who defeated London University in the final.  Their coach Helen Bloor was also looking after the coxless pair of Callam Gillespie and Ryan O'Sullivan, who beat Burton Leander in their final.

Repeating their triumph at Nottingham City Regatta, Dominic Harrison, from Colonel Frank Seeley School at Calverton and Tom Savage from Djanogly City Academy won the Junior 14 double sculls.  Dave Phillips and partner did the same in Veteran D double sculls.

There were also wins for the Veteran E four stroked by Nigel Hollingworth with a verdict of 2 feet! Bill Payne and Mike Collier won the Veteran H double sculls.

Captain Mark Cooke, who towed a trailer of boats to the regatta, said "It was yet another excellent days racing for the Club we are now getting into our stride but the big tests of Loughborough, Henley, National Schools and National Championships are yet to come."

On a sunny, Sunday morning nearly 50 people attended the Nottingham Rowing Club open day, organized by Dave Sharp and designed, just as a taster, for anyone who wanted to go out in a real rowing boat.

Initially, and after confirming that they could swim, interested parties rowed on indoor rowing machines, they then had a short session in the rowing tank and then went onto the water with experienced rowers.

Reaction was very positive.  In fact over 10 signed up to be full members of the Club on the spot.

All interested participants have been invited back to a four week course, at the end of which those who want to compete will be fed into existing squads. Those who don't will become recreational rowers and use the fleet purchased with a grant from the Sports Council.

The first session takes place at 6.15pm on Wednesday May 14th.  Thereafter it will be Sunday morning at 9.30am.

Said Dave "I was delighted with the response. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and Club members worked hard to make sure everyone was looked after.  I look forward to coaching the newcomers over the next four weeks."

Keith Atkinson, Club President said that he was surprised that many visitors felt that rowing was an elitist sport. He put that down to Oxford and Cambridge, Henley and the Public Schools. "For £25.00 per month you can sit in a £16,000.00 eight, train every night on a rowing machine and use the Club bar with wonderful views over the river" he added.

After their incredible start to the rowing season, winning over twenty trophies in eight days, Nottingham Rowing Club, an amalgamation of the Boat Club and Britannia Rowing Club, spent the bank holiday week-end training on the River Trent.

Although two veteran rowers went off to Evesham.  There, rowing on the river Avon, on a wet and humid day, 75 year old Bill Payne beat his opponent from Warwick on a re-row after dead-heating in the first round.

He then joined Peter Massey and defeated a Warwick double scull and then opponents from Bradford-upon-Avon.

In an attempt to attract more people to take up a more active lifestyle, the new Club is holding an open day on May 11th from 9.30- 12.30.  It will be an excellent opportunity to look round the Club, examine the boats and go out onto the water.  As Bill Payne shows age is no problem-everyone is welcome.

With 5 wins at Leicester Regatta, 4 at Birmingham and 12 at Nottingham City Regatta, as it enters its second full season the Nottingham Rowing Club (an amalgamation of the old Boat Club and Britannia Rowing Club) is on a roll.

At Birmingham, rowed on a breezy Edgbaston Reservoir, Rebekah Royles, from West Bridgford School, won Junior 13 sculls on her birthday.  Holly Oughton, from Trent College, won J 14 sculls.

Dominic Harrison, who is at Colonel Frank Seeley School Calverton, won J 14 sculls and was joined by Tom Savage of Djanogly City Academy to take the J 14 double sculls.

At Nottingham City Regatta, where there were over 500 entries, the first days racing was disrupted by strong wind and some races were cancelled; even so the Club won two events. Lindsey Morton won women's sculls and the women's eight won Senior 3 eights.

On the second day water conditions were much better.  The Women won four events-Lindsey won sculls again. Senior 3 fours, Novice Quadruple Sculls and Novice Eights were also won .In the Novice crew were girls from local West Bridgford schools.

The Men won six events on day 2.  Dave Marshall began the day with winning men's sculls, this was rapidly followed by Novice Quadruple Sculls, Senior 2 eights, where the Club beat Public school Canford by three feet.  Veteran E eights, and two of the closest races of the week- end. In the first a Veteran Double Scull stroked by Dave Phillips beat Nottingham and Union by 9 one hundredths of a second and Mark MacCormick won senior 4 sculls by a tenth of a second.

"It has been a great start to the season, crews and scullers aged 13-75 have raced in every kind of boat from single sculls to eights" said Captain Mark Cooke "But this is only a start-Our main aims are Henley, National Schools, National Veterans, National Championships and creating International Rowers.  In addition we must continue to grow the Club.  Our next open day is the morning of May 11th".
