Sport is really popular in Nottingham. There are lots of sports clubs in the city and many are high-profile and top-ranking in the country. Let’s take a look at the Top 5 Sports (in no particular order) this city has to offer.

  1. Football

There are two main football clubs in Nottingham that have high profiles. These are Nottingham Forest and Notts County. The former is one of two English clubs to win consecutive European Cups (the other being Liverpool) while the latter is the oldest professional club on the planet.

Nottingham Forest F.C. are members of the Championship League, which is the 2nd after the Premier League. They were most successful under Brian Clough who managed them for 18 years until 1993. Under his management, they won a League title, four league cups and two European Cups.

Notts County F.C. is the oldest professional football team in the world. The club was founded one year before the Football Association was established, in 1862. In 1888, Notts County were founders of the Football League and they were FA Cup winners in 1894.

  1. Cricket

Nottingham is home to many international cricket matches with Trent Bridge being a major international venue for test matches and international games. Trent Bridge is also home to Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. This club won the County Championship in 2005 and came runners up in the Twenty20 cup competition in 2006.

Some of the most notable cricket matches here have been two Finals Days of the Twenty20 Cup, in particular, the 2009 semi-final between Pakistan and South Africa. In terms of its history, Trent Bridge has been used as a cricket ground since the 1830s and in 1899, it hosted its first test match between England and Australia.

As well as being an important cricket ground, Trent Bridge has won awards for its architecture.

  1. Ice Sports

The city of Nottingham is home to the National Ice Centre, which was the UK’s first ice pad facility to have two Olympic-sized ice pads. The Nottingham Panthers have the NIC as their home and training group, having been established over 70 years. The club has been a part of the Elite Ice Hockey League since 2003 and has won 8 finals of the Challenge Cup.

2017 saw the Nottingham Panthers be the first ice hockey team in Britain to win a European Trophy, they then reached the last 16 of the European Champions Hockey League the same year.

The NIC is also the training group for the GB Short Track Speed Skating Squad. Elise Christie is a member of this squad and in 2016 she broke the world record in 500m short track speed skating.

The National Ice Centre offers ice skating, speed skating, and ice hockey lessons to both adults and children.

  1. Rugby

Both Rugby Union and Rugby League are popular in Nottingham. Nottingham R.F.C are members of the second tier of rugby union in England, the RFU Championship. The Nottingham Outlaws RLFC is a relatively new rugby league club that was established in 1999. The team plays in the Premier Division of the Yorkshire Men’s League. They have junior teams too.

Nottingham R.F.C  was established by Alexander Birkin around 1877 when he returned from Rugby School in Warwickshire having been introduced to the sport there.

There are a number of places in Nottingham where children can learn to play rugby, including Ruggerbugs, Active Tag Rugby, Rugbytots and more serious clubs like Ashfield Rugby Club.

  1. Boxing

Boxing is increasing in popularity in Nottingham and is home to Carl “The Cobra” Froch MBE, a former professional boxer. He now works as a commentator for Sky Sports and is a boxing analyst.

For those interested in training in boxing, Nottingham School of Boxing is the place to go. It has been established to help young people build tolerance, confidence, respect, discipline and self-esteem whilst learning the sport.
