Top International Fencers come to Nottingham

Sport Nottinghamshire

Written by Ian Wakefield (Sport Nottinghamshire)

Fencing is a sport which doesn’t hit the headlines very often but all that may be about to change as Alan Rapley the National Academy Manager for British Fencing and former Olympian told me “Now is an exciting time for Fencing as it is for the rest of British Sport, our aim and the reason I was bought in was to apply some of the systems and learnings from other sports such as Swimming and Triathlon to enable our Fencers to perform at a higher level”.

Alan told me that British Fencing had booked the facilities at Nottingham Trent University, Clifton Campus for 7 days starting this Friday (17th), during that time, he explained there would be 120 of the best British U/20 fencers coming primarily for the purpose of talent identification.  To ensure that the British Fencers are properly tested they have invited top internationals (U/20) and Club fencers from France and Italy.  The festival of Fencing begins on Saturday with an all-day tournament for Foil and Sabre disciplines. (Media Photographers and Spectators are Welcome).

Fencing surely has to be one of the most spectacular sports, it’s dynamic, swashbuckling and even James Bond 007 has been known to dabble so it must be cool too.

The sport has suffered in the past for having a public school elitist image, British Fencing are keen to address this and encourage people of all backgrounds to come and have a go.  If you live in Nottinghamshire and want to see what it’s all about come down to Lee Westwood Sports Centre, Clifton between 9 – 7 pm or call in at one of the local Fencing clubs which you can find on the GO FENCE website .

Media are welcome to visit the 7 day camp anytime, which includes 3 former Olympians on the coaching staff see contacts below.
