Schools Council for Sport

The volunteer led Nottinghamshire Schools' Council for Sport is the umbrella organisation responsible for supporting extra-curricular school sport activities for schools throughout the County and City organised by the County Schools’ Sports Associations.  The Council was formed in 1974 and is supported jointly by both County & City Local Authorities.

Currently there are 14 Registered Associations: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Football,  Hockey (Boys), Hockey (Girls), Netball, Orienteering, Rugby, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis.

The School Sports Associations exist primarily to provide a programme of sports activities at grass roots level.  These activities are open to all Nottinghamshire and Nottingham pupils and students between the ages of 9 and 19 years in full time education.  Schools have the opportunity to participate in programmes of full-sided and small-sided team indoor and outdoor League, Knock-out, Tournaments, Festivals and taster sessions.  A vast number of teachers, SDOs, ancillaries, Governors and parents are involved in the organisation of running these grass root activities.

All of the registered Associations provide opportunities for pupils to develop their talents. Schools are urged to identify their most talented players and make nominations for selection to County, City and District representative squads.

Emphasis is being placed upon player and teacher coach development. During the last twelve months the 15 Associations and their affiliated members have organised courses for player development, raising teachers’ awareness and the development of sport specific coaches.

NSCS is grateful for the support extended by the County & City Local Authorities’ annual grant. This grant is allocated to the 14 registered County Associations who annually or termly bid into three grant headings.  These areas were selected after much deliberation by the officers, to identify those areas which were common to most of the sports Associations and which gave a vital element of support to underpin their activities:

  • Maintenance Grant
This covers day to day running expenses, e.g. post, telephone, printing, laundry, playing equipment (not kit) etc.
  • Travel Grant
This supports the cost of out of County travel.
  • Pitches and Premises
This covers the cost of the hire of facilities for fixtures, coaching sessions, Association meetings etc.
